How we handle your data
- We collect what we need to coach you: your account details, the training information you give us, and the activities you import from services like Strava.
- Your training data is used to build and adjust your plan and to generate coaching feedback. Parts of it are sent to our AI provider to produce that feedback; it is not used to train their models.
- We do not sell your personal information, we do not show ads, and we do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
- If you work with a coach on Split, that coach can see your training data. Nobody else can.
- You can delete your account and all of its data from inside the app at any time, or by emailing us.
This summary is for orientation only. The full text below governs.
Who we are and what this covers
The Service is operated by Split Running Co., the data controller for the personal information described in this Policy. Questions and privacy requests go to support@getsplit.ai.
This Policy covers the Split app for iOS and Android, the website and coach workspace at https://www.getsplit.ai, our emails and push notifications, and support conversations with us. It does not cover third-party services you connect to Split (such as Strava or Garmin) or the app stores you install it from, each of which has its own privacy policy.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: name, email address, password (stored only as a salted hash), time zone, and, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the name and email those providers share with us.
- Training profile: goal race and date, target time or pace, recent race results, weekly mileage, available training days, injuries or limitations you choose to tell the coach about, and your preferred units.
- Conversations: messages you exchange with the AI coach, and, if you have one, with your human coach. These are stored so the coach can keep context across sessions and so you can review your history.
- Manual activities and notes: runs, cross-training, and notes you log by hand.
- Feedback and support: anything you send through the in-app feedback button or by email, including any screenshots you attach.
- Coach details: if you register as a coach, your name, email, coaching business name, roster, and the plans, notes, and messages you create for your athletes.
Information from services you connect
When you connect a fitness platform we import your activity data from it. This is optional and controlled by you.
- Strava:activities (distance, time, pace, elevation, laps and splits), per-second streams where available (heart rate, cadence, pace, altitude, GPS coordinates), activity titles and descriptions, gear, and your Strava profile basics. We receive updates through Strava's webhooks when you upload, edit, or delete an activity.
- Garmin: where Garmin sync is enabled for your account, the equivalent activity and health metrics from Garmin Connect.
- Apple and Google sign-in: an identity token plus the name and email you approve sharing. We never receive your Apple ID or Google password.
Information collected automatically
- Device and app data: device model, operating system version, app version, language, time zone, and a push-notification token if you enable notifications.
- Usage and diagnostics: which features you use, when you sync, errors and crash reports (which may include the screen you were on and a stack trace, but not the content of your conversations), and server logs with IP address, browser or client type, and timestamps.
- AI usage metering: the number of coach messages and the token counts of AI requests for your account, used for capacity planning and, for coach accounts, plan limits.
- Cookies: the website uses strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in and secure your session. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect precise location in the background, contacts, photos (other than screenshots you attach to feedback), payment card numbers (handled entirely by Apple, Google, or Stripe), or government identifiers.
Health and fitness data
Some of what Split handles, such as heart rate, weight, and the injuries or health conditions you mention to the coach, may be considered health data or a special category of personal information under laws like the EU and UK GDPR and certain U.S. state laws. We process this data only to provide the coaching you asked for and only with your consent, which you give by connecting a fitness platform or by telling the coach about it.
You can withdraw that consent at any time by disconnecting the platform, by asking the coach to disregard information, or by deleting your account. We never use health or fitness data for advertising, never sell it, and never share it with employers, insurers, or data brokers.
How we use information
- To provide the Service: build and adjust your training plan, match imported activities to planned workouts, calculate paces and training load, and generate workout, weekly, and race-block feedback.
- To power the AI coach: send relevant parts of your profile, plan, activities, and conversation to our AI provider so it can respond (see section 5).
- To support coaching relationships: show your data to a coach you have chosen to work with (see section 6).
- To communicate with you: send transactional email (sign-in codes, password resets, receipts, plan and recap notifications), in-app messages, and push notifications you have enabled. You can turn push notifications off in your device settings at any time.
- To manage subscriptions: confirm your entitlement, apply trials and grace periods, and handle billing questions.
- To keep the Service safe and working: authenticate you, prevent abuse and fraud, enforce rate limits and our Terms, debug errors, and monitor performance.
- To improve the product: understand which features are used and where things break. We do this with aggregated or de-identified data wherever possible.
- To comply with law: meet legal obligations, respond to lawful requests, and establish or defend legal claims.
Legal bases (EEA, UK, and Switzerland)
Where these laws apply, we rely on: performance of our contract with you (providing the Service you signed up for); your consent (health data, connected platforms, optional notifications); our legitimate interests in securing, supporting, and improving the Service, balanced against your rights; and compliance with legal obligations.
How the AI coach uses your data
The AI coach is powered by large language models from Anthropic. To answer you, we send the model the context it needs: relevant parts of your training profile, current plan, recent activities, and the conversation so far. We send only what the request needs and never your password, payment details, or push token.
- Anthropic processes this data on our behalf as a service provider under a commercial agreement. Under that agreement, your data is notused to train Anthropic's models.
- We do not use your conversations or activities to train models of our own.
- AI responses are generated automatically. The coach can make mistakes. Plan changes it proposes are applied to your plan only through the flows shown in the app, and you can always ask it to undo a change or contact us.
- A small number of Split Running Co. staff may review individual conversations to debug a problem you reported, to investigate abuse, or to improve coaching quality. We keep such access to the minimum needed.
Coaches and athletes
Splitlets human coaches work with athletes. A coach can see an athlete's data only after the two are linked, which happens when the athlete enters a coach's code or accepts the coach's request, or when a coach creates a managed profile for an athlete they already work with off-platform.
- Once linked, your coach can see your profile, plan, activities, recaps, and your conversations with the AI coach, and can message you and propose or make plan changes.
- Coaches may use athlete data only to coach that athlete. Our Terms prohibit coaches from exporting, selling, or using it for any other purpose.
- You can end a coaching link at any time from your profile. Your coach then loses access to your account and its data going forward.
- If a coach created a managed profile for you, the coach is responsible for having your permission to enter your information. Email us if you believe a profile was created for you without consent and we will remove it.
Strava data
Our use of Strava data is governed by the Strava API Agreement in addition to this Policy. In particular:
- Strava data is shown only to you and, if you have one, your coach. We never display it publicly, never share it with third parties other than the providers listed above, and never use it for advertising or to train machine-learning models.
- Activities that came from Strava are labeled as such in the app.
- You can revoke Split's access at any time at Strava → Settings → My Apps or from your profile in the app. When you do, we stop syncing immediately and delete your Strava access tokens. Imported activities stay in your training log so your history stays intact; email us and we will delete those too, or delete your account to remove everything.
- Strava's own handling of your data is described in the Strava Privacy Policy.
How long we keep information
- Account and training data: for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your profile, plans, activities, conversations, and connected-platform tokens are deleted from our production database promptly, and from encrypted backups within 30 days.
- Billing records: kept as long as required for tax, accounting, and dispute purposes, typically seven years, held by Stripe or the app store rather than by us.
- Server logs and crash reports: up to 90 days, unless needed longer to investigate a security incident.
- Support email: kept in our support inbox so we can refer back to prior conversations; deleted on request.
- Coach records:when an athlete deletes their account, everything tied to that athlete, including the coach's notes, messages, and proposals for them, is deleted along with it and disappears from the coach's workspace.
Security
We protect your information with technical and organizational measures appropriate to its sensitivity: encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, row-level access controls so that each account can only read its own data, hashed passwords, short-lived session tokens, least-privilege access for staff, and provider platforms with independent security certifications.
No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects your personal information we will notify you and any regulator as required by law. If you discover a security issue, please email support@getsplit.aiwith the subject “Security” and we will respond quickly. Please do not publicly disclose it before we have had a chance to fix it.
Your rights and choices
Things you can do yourself
- Delete your account from Profile → Security in the app. This removes your account and its data as described in section 9. It cannot be undone.
- Edit your profile and training details from Profile at any time.
- Disconnect Strava or Garmin from Profile or from the platform's own settings.
- Turn off push notifications in your device settings.
- End a coaching link from Profile.
Requests you can make to us
Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, to receive a portable copy of it, to withdraw consent, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We extend these rights to every user regardless of location. Email support@getsplit.ai from the address on your account. We will verify the request, respond within 30 days (45 days where the law allows), and tell you if we need more time.
You may authorize an agent to make a request for you. We will ask the agent for proof of authorization and may confirm the request with you directly.
United States state privacy laws
Residents of California and other states with comprehensive privacy laws have the rights above. For clarity: we do not sell personal information, do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and do not use it for profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. Because we do not sell or share data in this way, there is no opt-out to exercise, and we do not respond differently to Global Privacy Control signals. The categories of personal information we collect, our sources, and our purposes are described in sections 2 through 7. If we deny a request you may appeal by replying to our response.
EEA, UK, and Switzerland
You may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to address your concern first at support@getsplit.ai.
Children
The Service is not directed to children and you must be at least 16 years old to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, email support@getsplit.ai and we will delete it. Coaches who work with athletes under 16 must not create accounts or managed profiles for them on Split.
International transfers
Split Running Co. is based in the United States and our providers store and process data there. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards with our providers for these transfers.
Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy as the Service or the law changes. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. For material changes we will notify you by email or in the app before they take effect. Continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the updated Policy.
